so tonight...
argentina vs germany
italy vs ukraine
interesting article i read in the news yesterday linking mathematical calculations to world cup winners.
it was said that this year's winner would be european.
then again, using this method to calculate only means there's be no winners outside of europe and latin america FOREVER.
so it could be crap.
i can't wait for 2300hrs tonight!!

Why do they wait 3 days to have matches, and then they have 2 on the same day? ?

Being a Friday night, I'm right there with you calamityman! Why did they have a 3 day hiatus? Hell, can you imagine how wrecked the fans would be if they cheered/drank/stank for 3 days on the trot? It's clever planning by the Germans to let people sober up and catch some zzzzzs.

yeah, this is the best planned world cup since i knew the world cup existed back in 90.
germany vs argentina
what a CRACKER of a match!
argentina were having massive possession of the ball, they were in control for most of the match but in the end, germany just held on for a 1-1 draw throughout extra time before beating them 4-2 in the shootout.
i think argentina's downfall was in the substitutions they made in order to preserve their slender 1-0 lead after the 49th minute. i still don't understand how pablo aimar, lionel messi and javier saviola could be on the bench over other players like lucho gonzalez and julio cruz.
lehmann saved two penalties in the shootout.
now no one, not even kahn can dispute the fact that he's germany's no 1. it's also nice to point out that both the top two goalkeepers kissed and make up right before the shootout, televised all over the world and the stadium's giant screens, amidst overwhelming approval from their fans.
my heart was with germany in this match and i am glad they won.
klinsmann was a great player and now he's a great coach no matter what happens after this stage.

oh by the way, has anybody got any idea what happened after the shootout?
there were some pushing, shoving and argentinian players lunging at the german contingent... i read somewhere it could be because they were mad at how the germans were behaving during the shootout.
i didn't see anything in the match that could warrant such a protest from the argentinian contingent, especially from heinze and an unidentified player (probably a reserve as he still had his bib on).

I'm just back in the hotel after a great evening in House Frankfurt in KL. The first half was lousy, but finally they woke up. Guess it was a good deal for the one's who bought tickets for this "small final" in Berlin. The next "small final" will be Germany-Italy and then of course the real one against Brazil. Brazil will win . Cheers, Mac

details of fracas: soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=372953&cc=5739time to make friends alright... so anyway, italy vs ukraine i've said before that lippi should perhaps show more respect to luca toni and play him from start to finish uninterrupted and this is the result: two goals for him in italy's 3-0 win. about time too. brazil is not going to win it.

I went to bed after the first half of Argentina-Germany. The booze made me too tired Well, with Switzerland out, the world cup is more or less finished for all the REAL soccer fans!! The final will be Germany-Brazil, and Brazil will win. That's what I always said, and still do. Though I doubt I will watch it. I will probably be sleeping, full of booze again!

I want all these so called pannellist and journalists in that stupid newspaper called the straits time to apologise to Italy and Italians. Why are singaporean such a bunch of sheeps? One moron says something and everyone to follow. They know nothing, understand nothing yet allow themsleves to pontificate as if they were huge experts. A boring game? Italy is finished? Scandal here and scandal there? Ma vaffa....
Germany Argentina: Germany showed it's true colours. Nasty, lacking ideas, a country of cheaters! ballack should have been red carded for faking that fall in the penalty area. Anyway now they have 120 minutes in their legs and looked exhausted. We have 90 and are just starting to have fun.
Italy Ukraine: Amazing game. And to all the sheeps here, we proved you, as usual, wrong.

Dear Don Corleone,
Hereby, I would like to apologise, in the name of the Singapore government, to Italy and all Italians for the very unfair reporting on the Italian team.
I would like to officially recognise that the members of the Italian team dive very well, and that any critique of their style of cheating is totally unwarranted.
Please do come to the President's palace at your earliest convenience for an official apology and a sculpture, in the shape of a dolphin, in recognition of the Italian team incredible skills in diving.

tonight:
england vs portugal
brazil vs france
i only want portugal to win because of their fantastic self-belief this time which is clearly lacking in the english team. it'd be nice to see the brazil of europe and the real brazil square off in the semis.
if it was england facing brazil, they'd lose hands down. no excitement at all.
no prizes for guessing who i think would win the second quarter final match.

At this stage of the tournament, anything can happen. Portugal v England... too close to call. Brazil v France... methinks France has a chance to go forward.

england vs portugal
england deserved to lose. they were negative, apart from the defenders they played like they didn't care, wasting opportunity after opportunity.
rooney's red card didn't seem warranted. although he kind of deserves it because he never learns his lesson. all that stamping, pushing and shoving is so immature.
the referee has got to watch his back from now on. seems like he's got something against england. maybe his english ex-wife didn't give him enough love. i'm sure there's a price for his head now.
i don't think rooney and c.ronaldo can play in the same team after the world cup.

The English players are individually talented but I guess Martin Tyler's question ("do we have a champion team?") has now been answered... again.
They need to get rid of the mindset that their Premier League is the best blah, blah, blah and that only an Englishman can-should coach/manage England... I have to admit that Sven's a waste of space. Scolari would have been an inspired choice or even Guus.
Nobody disputes the quality of competition in England. However, the native players there have to be able to get comfortable with football styles from all over. I really don't think it's lack of skill that puts the mockers on England; it's a mental thing. They just need to dump the baggage of 1966 and get on with the job.
And France... d**n, I should have placed a bet! They're coming good in these final stages of the World Cup.
So, now we have Italy v Germany and Portugal v France. I can't pick any of these teams because they have all shown hunger and a will to win.
Anybody care to hazard a guess??

I found that Portugal was quite bad when they faced the style of playing of the English team (9 men in defence, and then kicking the ball to the 2 guys who remained in attack). But the English style of playing is very boring, so I am happy they lost.
Portugal v. Brazil would have been a GREAT game! Unfortunately it's going to be Portugal v. France. I think I will give that one a miss!
I am also quite saddened that only Europeans are left! How boring! I hope African soccer is going to be good soon, so we have three continents playing against each other. Asia is never going to make it, at least until they stop eating crappy rice and start eating some potatoes, so they grow up a bit!

I am sorry Don Corleone, but I think that Germany will be in the final. Though another Germany v. Italy game should be great!
