As I said in the beginning and forever shall be......... You all have been had....... If nothing else it has made others think hasn't it? I personally don't really care one way or the other but this was a topic that was so easy to fan I couldn't resist. As an aside, I didn't have nor did I want children until I came to asia in the early '80's. It wasn't until I met my current wife that I decided to change my thoughts about remaining childless. That said, I really could care less how many old lonely people there are out there. They made their beds and they are the ones that will have to sleep in them. Least that's what my pappy always told me....... After reading the thread since my first reply, the one thing that has come to light to me is that maybe those persons not wanting to have families is a good thing. Let me elaborate. yadda.....yadda......yadda That ought to be enough fuel for a flame war. Go for it! ;D Now SMS I had always thought you to be "sensible" person, but now I'm not so sure. Me? Sensible? Yadda.......Yadda.......Yadda....... By the way, it was obvious that you are having trouble telling when you are being had so I'll help you as the original post was definitely sms cool runnings....... sms

"cool runnings" is a movie about a jamacian bobsled team with african american actors as the stars, so when you said "cool runnings" it appeared you were making fun of my background.

Sorry if it appeared so. It is a signoff I've been using off & on for the past year or so. It was a sign off by a poster on the AngryBoard who used to post in "Talking Point" and would drive everybody nuts - some of the transplants to this board from there will remember "Antoine". I've never heard of the movie - is it worth seeing? Apparently not from your reaction. Seriously, no offense was meant. sms

Well for those of you who remember this thread, I was one of the posters above taking exception to being called selfish for being childless.
Well since then the biological clock kicked in BIG time, and we decided to adopt a child. He joined us this week, and I cannot describe the amount of love I have for this child, nor how having to get up in the night to feed/change nappies has made me love him even more. My formerly cynical husband is similarly besotted.
On every "rational" basis this was a totally stupid thing for us to do at our relatively mature time of life.
But I'm SO glad we did.
Happy New Year everyone.

Cool! Glad you are happy.
I am wondering, how old are you? How long did the process of adoption take? It doesn't seem to have taken that long, since the post was running that long a time ago (like 6 months). And where does the kid come from? Singapore (supposed you live in Singapore)? China? Forgive my many questions...
I am also one of the original posters, and thinking whether having a child is good or not. I actually think that having a child is selfish, not not having one. After all you force someone who didn't ask you anything to be brought into this world.
I think sometimes kids a nice, and sometimes they are a pain the butt. Let's see what my wife and me decide doing...

Kids: good, lah.
But if you're having them just to boost the population, for earth's sake, don't. It might actually be a good thing if the human race died out.
By the way, did 'Just a man' give up and go home?
ps - congratulations to Recently Besotted Mummy, and all other new parents. Isn't it amazing how your whole life changes, in ways you never imagined, and all (or mostly) for the better? I'm one of those 'never going to have kids' people who now has a toddler; I'm so glad I crossed over.

You don't know what true love is until you have children. But they bring a lot of agony as well!! I couldn't imagine my life without them.

No, not gone home lah. I am still here, always reading this board, sometimes posting (with another names obviously). I still don't have kids, and I still don't know if I want some. If I have kids I will have to work 5 years long, or maybe even 10 years longer. Is it worth it?

Kids have their up and downs. BUT: You get your revenge by spoiling your grandchildren and handing them back when they get fractious!

I am already 40. I am unlikely to ever know my grandkids, at least not for a long time.
