SPI Spooky Walk @ Woodlands Cemetery
on 17 May 2008, Saturday
One of the oldest cemeteries in Singapore, dated back to the pre-WW2 era, “Kwong Hou Sua” a Teochew Cemetery (commonly known as Woodlands Cemetery) is going to be exhumed to make way for a new MRT depart soon in October this year.
With a total of nearly 3000 graves occupying on a large hilly area of 21ha, the site is truly full of rich cultural heritage as well as having a significant war history too.
Due to the closure of the cemetery, Woodlands cemetery has just gone through the last Qing Ming from last month. Cemeteries offer a rich window on the past. By looking at the design of tombstones, the aesthetics of headstone carvings and the people they envelop (both living and dead), we get a better insight of what our society was like. Cemeteries also reflect religious and ritual life.
On the coming Saturday, SPI takes you to have a historical field trip on Woodlands cemetery. We will show you some significant tombs, the myths and facts of the place, and the story of the tombs that reflects changing concepts of family life, wealth, power and class.
Don’t miss out this day excursion with SPI on the treasure trove of Singapore’s cultural and historical legacy.
