worst performer of the match?
the referee.
several bad calls there in a scoreless first half.
now for the second half.

Yeah, the ref made some dubious calls. But yeah, as SBS' Les Murray said: "There's a wonderful feeling of freedom to be able to call the ref a w***er." But bloody hell, there were some terrible fouls, weren't there? The boot-in-the-face kind.
Portugal played interestingly. They created chances but were largely frustrated by the Iranians. Anyway, they got their 3 points.

before the world cup i thought portugal was going the way of france. you know the too many old fogeys problem but instead they have been excellent. no primadonnas around (ok maybe just one: cristiano ronaldo) unlike the french.

Actually, they could be the surprise team of the tournament, just like the Spaniards. I'd just like to see them rely less on Figo or C. Ronaldo. I get the impression that if those two are taken out through injury, the team wouldn't have enough depth to be effective.

You guys forgot Deco.
If you knew anything about football tactics, you will know that the central midfielder Deco is the main man for Portugal. Figo and Ronaldo are just side acts, both literally and figuratively. For the main thrust of the attack, the entire Portugeuse team hinges upon Deco. He is the pivot.
No opponent knows how to mark Deco. Deco loves getting forward to flick and thread through passes to the wingers and forwards. Only Deco possesses the vision and the technique to unlock packed defences. Deco's positioning is superb - he is always in the right place at the right time.
When given the physical treatment by defenders, Deco will just sit back in defensive midfield and spray his 40 yard passes around from there. The entire forward line including the wingers, depend on Deco's distribution.
The only player in this World Cup who comes close to resemble Deco, would be Andrea Pirlo of Italy. Lampard is the same way as well but he is a lot more direct than Deco.

"deco", you may be right. These attacking midfielders are deadly on the pitch if they are deployed properly.
