I am thinking about buying a projector. Although the very best ones are still very expensive (like 10,000 bucks or so) there is another class (480p projectors) with prices around 1,000 bucks or so, which is acceptable. My question is as follows: Once I have the projector, what else do I need to watch a TV program? I believe that I can plug the projector into a dvd player to watch dvd movies, but I think I do need something to receive the TV programs. What is this something called? Thank you!

I don't have the answers to your questions, but we went around to a friends house to watch the Germany v Costa Rica, and the England v Paraguay matches. They had one of these projectors. It was excellent but they said that the room needs to be dark. Apparently only the very expensive ones work in a light room.

Thanks! May I ask if they had a plastic (or other material) screen, or if they projected it on the wall?

You can project it to a wall but for the best picture screen is necessary. As for hooking up TV/Cable they go straight in depending on the model and if it doesn't you can always run it through the set top box or video. The main advantages of the projector I feel they don't take up as much space but there would be strong arguments on picture quality especially in the price range you are talking about.

Thanks KK. The problem is I don't have a tv, so I am thinking about buying this instead of a TV. I need some sort of receiver, or can I put the cable straight from the wall socker to the projector without going through a TV? Does the projector have all that hardware and software to change channels, adjust volume (I know I need to attach external speakers to the projector), etc.?

They projected it directly on to the wall. The picture quality was good.

If you have or are getting cable, the Starhub box is your receiver and that sends the picture to whatever medium you have, in your case a projector. You can even run a computer through it if you wanted to. Make sure you ask when you buy if this is the case but in my experience they all have this capability. It is just he same as running a cable from a DVD player to watch a movie. With Starhub you just use that remote to adjust channels, volume etc.

Why do you want to get a projector? A TV is sharper. And don't you need quite a big room to watch it in, else your eyes will be darting from ear to ear?

A projector is cheaper if you want a large screen, and I like a large screen. As to why I like a large screen: Have you noticed during the World Cup? We were just trying to look at tiny dots kicking a ball around. With a projector you can actually see the players.
Also, a projector needs less space. Televisions (except flat screen TVs, which are really expensive) take up a lot of space, and are very ugly. It seems that the whole living room is just there for that.
But it's true that I need a large room. I will move soon, so I will wait to see how large my room is. If it is big enough, I almost settled on the Toshiba DPD TDP-TW350U, which is about $2,300. Does anybody know that model?
