A fun and engaging way to explore some of Singapore’s most distinctive neighbourhoods and districts, the guided ArchiTours will be held daily throughout the festival. The guided ArchiTours aim to educate and inspire locals and tourists alike on the unique architecture in Singapore and how the changing urban landscapes affect the way we live, work and think.
The ArchiTours will highlight the development and expression of local architecture through the times, charting the influences of changing political, economical, social and cultural conditions, and drawing attention to the architectural milestones and predominant language used. Comparison will also be made between the traditional and contemporary architectural interpretations.
Some of the landmarks lined-up for the ArchiTours include Tiong Bahru SIT Flats, Pearl Bank Apartments, Golden Mile Shopping Complex and Chinese High School. Participants will also get to experience night life through the architectural eyes, visiting unique watering holes such as Dempsey Road, Loof, Muse and St. James Power House at the specially curated night tours.

How can a post-colonial city snap out of the pragmatic mode of urban development and move towards becoming a global city? In this tour, we shall explore the translation of architectural concepts imported from the West, customized to form a compatible fit with the local landscape. Can the notion of global and local co-exist without erasing the distinctive qualities of individual countries? What are the strategies employed in Singapore and have these attempts been successful or compromising acts on the preservation of our historical and cultural legacy?

The infantry stages of Singapore’s urban development and quest for an architectural identity since the 1930s saw a series of experimentation that had to respond to the cultural context and the demands of the booming population, in addition to the principles of nationalism. The journey through this tour brings forward glimpses into the present past, the paths through quaint neighbourhoods, the ideals behind the existence of Metabolist megastructures with aims to allow for mixed used development, the morphology of styles and typology into public housing and high rise housing.
Locations: Singapore Conference Hall Tiong Bahru SIT Flats Pearlbank Apartments People's Park Shopping Complex Golden Mile Complex City Hall
Time:

Night spots – places of mere entertainment value or something much more? As we explore the night scene of Singapore from a different angle we hope to raise questions of the aptness of locating capitalist / consumerist functions within conserved, historical buildings. What does it mean for entire districts to be packaged as tourist hot spots, both for existing users and the history of the site itself? Party the night away, but we can’t promise that your perceptions and experience of places will ever be the same again after the sun sets.
Locations: C.H.I.J.M.E.S Loof Muse @ National Museum Alley Bar Holland Village Clarke Quay Zouk St. James Power Station

1830hrs - 0130hrs
Duration: 7hrs
Meeting Point:
Meet at CHIJMES fountain beside Hog’s Breath.
Attire: Comfortable Clubbing Attire
(Be warned: Walking will be involved!)
Accessories: Identity Card & money (tour bears an M18 rating)
