Remembrance of Scenes Past: A Pictorial Narrative of the Lifestyle of the Peranakan Woman 11 Oct - 14 Oct The Arts House
Local artist May Oon captures glimpses of Peranakan life on canvas.
Working with oils on large canvases and largely with a restricted palette based on a range of gray tonalities described by Tuymans as the unofficial colour of memory, Oon captures vivid moments in the daily lives of Peranakan women or Bibiks at work and at play. Matriarchs are depicted in the kitchen, at the market or seated leisurely at a gaming table while young women, stylishly attired are casually engaged on walks during race days. The feel is highly nostalgic yet the work is dramatically contemporary in nature, reflecting the deeply reflective personal journey of a modern woman artist seeking to reclaim her Peranakan past for future generations.
