Hi everyone - there have been so many requests for extra tours these few
weeks for the various Festivals that I will be conducting the following:
MOONCAKE MAGIC WALKING TOUR - Sunday 9th Sept and Saturday 15th Sept $30
MEET: 9.20am at Sri Mariamman Temple corner Pagoda St/South Bridge Rds -
taxi stop nearby.
Tour starts 9.30am - drink stop and mooncake delicacies half-way - ending
Far East Square 12.30.
During this Walking tour of the Cantonese & Hokkien areas of Chinatown
Geraldene will tell of legends of the MoonFairy, Lanterns & secret messages
and overthrow of the Mongols centuries ago.
Walking through Pagoda, Temple, Smith, Sago & CLub Streets and back alleys
you will see restored shophouses, Old Opera Theatre, Calligrapher,
Woodcarvers, Street Barber, Medicine Shops, Clan Associations, finding some
interesting places to return again to visit and eat!
Walk will end at Far East Square at the famous Hokkien Bakery on Telok Ayer
- great area to have lunch, and easy to catch cab or MRT from Raffles place.
RAMADAN RAMBLE - Saturday 22 Sept 9.30am - Sunday 7 Oct 2.30pm $30
MEET: Corner Beach Rd/ Jalan Sultan next to Pedestrian Overhead Bridge.
TOUR: STARTS from Hajjah Fatima Mosque Garden nearby - ends Arab St approx
DRESS: Wear modest clothing - not too bare and below knees.Easy footwear to
remove if necessary
During the Fasting Month of Ramadan our Heritage Guide Geraldene Lowe-Ismail
will take us to visit Singapore's oldest Muslim Area of Kampong Gelam to
introduce us to the customs and traditions.
First stop will be the Hajjah Fatimah Mosque, built 1840 with its famous
well and leaning minaret.
We stroll the old streets and back-lanes to see street barbers and areas
where tombstone carvers and blacksmiths once plied their trades - taking in
the unique architecture and street life.
We will pass the grounds of the oldSultan's Palace - now restored as a Malay
Heritage Centre and stop for refreshments en route and see the stalls set up
in the area to sell home-cooked delicacies for breaking the Fast at sunset.
Passing the Sultan Mosque on our way to Bussorah & Arab Streets - famous
for fabrics, traditional clothing, prayer rugs, perfumed oils, cane ware and
jewellery - the tour will end with an optional Murtabak (meat filled
pancakes) meal at Zam Zam's.
LITTLE INDIA WALK Sunday 21 Oct 9.30am & SUnday 28 Oct 9.30am $30
Meet: KK Market, Corner Buffalo and Serangoon Roads
Come and visit Little India during the Deepavali Festival time, when the
Serangoon area
is very colourful and festive. The tour starts with a look at KK Market, one
of
Singapore's biggest and best-known wet markets. We walk around Serangoon &
back streets
where you will find sari shops and all your Indian spices and curry
ingredients
as well as sidewalk fortune tellers, jasmine garland makers, filigree gold,
earthenware and brooms. Visit a pawn shop and see all manner of things,
stopping nearby for the famous Teh Tarek drink.
As we walk we will learn the history of the area and
note the interesting restoration works and architecture of the colourful
terrace houses.
We visit the Kaliamman Temple with a description of the Gods, prayers,
rituals
and significance of the different festivals such as Deepavali. Other sights
include
the old Kampong Kapor, churches, Indian cooks making Chapati, Idali, Tosei
etc.,
grinding mills, luggage shops and the Junk and Metal Market.
So wear comfortable shoes - which must be removed to enter the temple and,
your cameras!
You are welcome to stay for an optional lunch at one of the many street
cafes - about $7 - Geraldene will explain the etiquette and all about Tosei
and teach you to eat with your hands!
