Remember The Cathay Restaurant at the old Cathay building? At its height of glamour in the '50s, this grand restaurant was the place where the rich and famous would flock to for exquisite Chinese food, or a night of entertainment by popular Chinese songstresses such as Ruby Wah.
Originally opened in the '40s, it eventually closed down in 1964 due to competition from other Chinese restaurants.
Now, more than 40 years on, Cathay has decided to revive this nostalgic dining place at the newly- revamped Cathay building.
Said senior advertising and promotions manager of Cathay Organisations Holdings, Lynette Lee: "When we were planning to reopen The Cathay, we wanted to incorporate a number of elements of the original building, and the restaurant was one of them."
The 200-seater, which will open today on the second level of The Cathay, now completes all facets of the original Cathay building, including a Cineplex with The Picturehouse, a mall and apartments.
Ms Lee added that The Cathay Restaurant, which will serve Chinese cuisine, is "a fusion of the past and present".
"The Cathay Restaurant is past and present, literally. It sits in a space that straddles both the heritage façade and new portion of the building," she said.
Diners will also get to see familiar nostalgic photos of former Cathay film stars and movie scenes, when you dine there. Another reminder of the past are the restaurant's five private dining rooms named after Cathay's old cinemas - the Pavilion, Majestic, Odeon, Ruby and Regal.
Helming the kitchen is Master Chef Ho Tsan Kan, who has worked with several popular Chinese restaurants since the mid '80s.
Don't be too surprised if you find some of the dishes familiar to Peach Garden's offerings. That's probably because PG Management Services, a subsidiary of the popular Peach Garden Group of restaurants, is currently managing the restaurant.
