Noticed a fly laying eggs in a dish in the glass display case. Pointed it out to the wait staff who waved the fly away. Explained for a second time that the fly had laid eggs and again pointed out the piece of offending chicken. Still not removed a minute or so later. So I said loudly within earshot of customers 'you HAVE to remove that dish, there are maggots in it!' Still sitting there 5 mins later when we left and was going to remain there until some hapless customer ordered it. We ate somewhere else by the way..

;D The title should have been 'Hope you never eat in restaurants'. I waited in a restaurant many years ago, and you would have been surprised by all the horrible things that happen in the kitchen areas Chears.

Yes, BM ;D. I too, used to work in a five-star restaurant and when we had nasty, whinging customers, we spit into their food before serving it to them. Smiling while they rant and rave was easier you see.

Samy's is way over rated. the staf are extremly slow, rude etc. The food is sitting there for hours on end. I got food poisoning last time I went....never again. If this is what people think as a "quaint" corner of Singapore, then that's pretty sad.

They cook it. Like the bigger eggs . The little protein push from the fly should not be noticable anyway due to it's limited size.

I used to work in a restaurant too - Oh the stories I could tell.
A piece of advice - never send the food back. I saw the chef put a pubic hair in someones food when they sent it back. Urine in gravy etc etc etc....

Quite unrelated, but not too much. The Thai (the largest exporter of rice in the world) have much higher maximum levels of rat pee in the rice than anybody else, much higher than the maximum allowed by the WTO. There was once a minister who said that they should follow WTO standards, but it was argued that it would be too expensive. Oh well, mai pen rai... Enjoy cheap Thai Jasmine rice... enjoy rat pee.

Samys is an Indian Restaurant. It used to be in the Civil Service Club on Holland Road but has recently moved. It's one of those places that you had to go to at least once if you lived in Singapore. Wherever it is now, I doubt the ambiance is the same ;D

So, where is Samy's?? They should be in one of those black and white buildings at Rochester Park or similar. Instead, I imagine that they have moved to some place with zero ambience.. O, the good old days! Expats loved the rustic charm of the old joint at Dempsey..

There's a Sammys at the new Marina Food Loft. I don't know if it is the same place branching out - the food's OK though and no maggots last time I was there!

I've worked in restaurants/pubs too and our kitchens were OK - no nasty stuff going on. If people sent stuff back we just re-did it (minus the vindictive tampering!). The only thing that springs to mind is the fancy cut veg they used for garnish in one (expensive) place - if the customer hadn't touched it, they'd fish it off the plate, wash it and re-use it! But that's tame compared to most other kitchen tales.
