I'm getting desperate!
I'm looking for an experienced housekeeper for our family. She must be a decent cook and ideally an independent worker.
East Coast family living in a townhouse with 3 kids (ages 1, 5 & 7), but minimal childcare. No pets.
Can anyone help me?

Yes, I know about those little things called 'maid agencies' . Just as I said in my OP, I'm having a hard time (with the afore mentioned agencies) and have found that the personal recommendation route is a good one when looking for quality help. I also don't troll supermarket noticeboards regularly enough (least not the ones that transfer maids post on) and I was hoping that someone here, unlike you, might help.

There are advantages to getting a maid via a maid agency, simply because, if you don't like her you can just call the agency and get a replacement. Depending on message board users to recommend a maid to you is no different than calling one of those notices offering transfer maids at supermarts. People here are not your personal friends so other than to dump their lousy maid on you, what makes you assume you'll be given a good recommendation? Be self-reliant and go to a maid agency and interview the maid you want yourself. SAving a couple of hundred of dollars does not guarantee you what you expect - quality help.
