I've been noticing this of late - never encountered it before, no matter how crowded the train was. There's a pervasive stink of something that seems like lots of people's BO all mixed together. How can they smell like this ALL the time? Is there something wrong with the ventilation? I take the NEL and change to the North-South line daily, and the NEL is fine - the N-S trains are the smelly ones. Also noticed it when I took the E-W line the other day. So is it SBS versus SMRT? And why now (last few months or so)? (No, it's not me. I use 4711 - guaranteed to keep you smelling delicious all day. )

Funny you should post that. I normally don't notice it too much unless there are a bunch of labourers close to me. Tonight though, I did notice exactly the same thing on the East-West line from Clementi to Outram Park. I was just hoping it was my imagination and even had a quick sniff to see if it were me! Weren't me! Phew! Was palpable though. Glad it wasn't just MY imagination.

Yeah!
And this smell is a different one from the usual sweaty-bodies smell.

Could be the excessive quantity of the mind control agent to keep people obedient. Especially now that the national soviet union day is coming up, it's important to have a lot of smiling and cheerful people on the roadsides waving 'em little flags. To avoid any dissident, additional quantities are released through air conditioning systems of offices, buses, trains and shopping centres to ensure smooth procession of the celebrations and blind acceptance of the speeches of all the great progress provided to the people.

It's the MRT - can't open windows. Just stand with nose as high as possible, breathing shallowly through the mouth, tucking a mint in to your cheek for last resort. And wearing good cologne so in dire straits you can shove your nose up your armpit.
If you see me doing the above, come up and say hello.

I wonder if They read these boards (d-oh, what "wonder" - of course they do!) and come up with counter-propaganda in the form of "letters to the editor". The other day I read one saying how the NEL trains are poorly ventilated. Bollocks! I've travelled NEL up, down, sideways and at all given times, including rushiest of rush hour, and it's never been stuffy or smelly. (Might have something to do with my 5'6+"... maybe the writer is vertically challenged... stuck at average chest height wouldn't be that fun!)
The North-South trains, however, are still smelly and unbearably stuffy, even at non-rush hour (I don't get into a Jurong-bound one at peak hour if I can help it) like post-lunchtime. You get in and you can't breathe, I have to pop a mint and breathe through my mouth.

in japan, they have those cologne sprays that automatically spritzes the carriage every 5 minutes.
that could work in the MRT

Y'know, McD, after watching 1984 - which MGM shows, btw - that actually rings true.

I thought 1984 is something one reads, not something one watches!

I tried to read 1984 (in German!), and it was a nightmare (reading it, not the story). So I watched it

Aaah, the smelly commute. Be glad you weren't around in the days when SBS ran buses without air-conditioning. Try riding a packed bus then on a rainy day with all windows shut. Mmmmm.

And occasionally still have to. They still run non-aircon buses on a few of the lines in the Jurong area as well as in the North-East. Try the 103 service that runs the loop service to Seletar Camp from Serangoon Central for one that I'm very familiar with having lived inside Seletar Camp for 15 years. *barf smilie*

I thought 1984 is something one reads, not something one watches! Yup, first you read it, then you watch it, and then you get the chills - it's fabulously done! I haven't been able to watch the whole thing in one go yet... get the heebie-jeebies at the rats scene.
