Stuff of dreams as fest packs in the punters...
From the archive, first published Friday 1st Oct 2004.
Around 20,000 visitors crammed into Belbroughton for the village's attraction-packed annual scarecrow festival at the weekend.
The festival, which took place on Saturday September 25 and Sunday September 36, saw the north Worcestershire village taken over by hundreds of handcrafted straw-stuffed creations.
Highlights among this year's many imaginative wurzels were Olympic competitors including a stunningly composed diver, Laurence Llewelyn Crowen from television's `Changing Fields', a Johnny Depp-like figure from Pirates of the Crowibbean and `The Old Wrecked Tory' at The Old Rectory (aka Margaret Thatcher looking a bit sloshed!).
Other attractions included skydiving wurzels, a circus, barbecue, pig roast, tombola, craft fair, face-painting for kids, miniature railway, farmers' market, cycle skills display, Appalachian dancers and church bell tower tours.
Prizes for the best scarecrows were presented by ex-Bishop of Dudley the Right Rev Tony Dumper on Sunday, which drew in as many - if not more - visitors as last year's sunny finale.
Organiser Paul Reynolds said: "The weather on Saturday put a lot of people off - so they all turned up on Sunday, which was manic.
"Everybody I spoke to thought it was wonderful and they said they were all looking forward to next year's event."
He said proceeds from the festival were still being counted, but money raised would go to Belbroughton's Holy Trinity Church, Belbroughton School, Belbroughton Recreation Centre and other village charities.
