Bit disappointed that Australia is included in the 'any other team' category, so my heart will vote that way but my money will say Brasil, ole ole.......

I reckon it could be a Euro team this time. Of course, Brazil will definitely be a huge favourite. But really, football is natural selection at its best. Whichever team's got it together on any given day, that's the one that'll get through. Remember Roger Milla's Cameroon or the South Koreans?
Can't pick any team until well into the second round.

Holland's now playing Serbia-Montenegro. The Dutch side of '74 is still the best... even if they didn't win the World Cup that year.

My heart's with Sweden, but my money's on Brazil. Germany should also have a pretty good chance.

Sad that Australia is not a single team, but perhaps I am simply being patriotic; perhaps there's not much chance of them winning but it would be great...

Let's see this evening. My money is on Japan. I think that Australia is too violent. I don't like it. At least that's what I heard. I have never seen them play! May the best win!

What?? You've never seen them play but you think they're too violent? Sheeesshhh! Have you seen the South Americans or the Italians or even some of the African nations?
Soccer's going the same way as tennis. The graceful baseliners and stroke players won't last long against the big hitters. That's why Agassi, Hewitt et al aren't winning tournaments like before. OK, Federer is an exception to the rule but even he is struggling against Nadal these days.
Football's the same imho. If you have a combo of hard tacklers, bull terriers and sublime playmakers in one team, you've got the lot.
Then again, football being football, something will happen in this tournament that will make me eat my words!!! Ha!!!

So... how many people in tennis injure other players? Somehow... when I think about a tennis court... two people... one on one side, and one on the other... how can one injure the other? Tell me the truth. Have you lost your marbles? And no. Hard tacklers and bull terriers are not what football is about. Watch the Brazilians if you want to find out what football is about.

So Japan lost. I had bet a beer that Japan would win, so I didn't get the beer! Anyway, I gladly admit that Australia played better. Kudos to the good Australian players, who managed to score three very nice goals. The Japanese goal was by cheating anyway. Japanese players really seemed to be very slow compared to the Australians. I don't know if it's the short legs, or what, but they really don't seem able to run. Also, all their passes were in the wrong direction. They really missed a few good chances in front of the goal. Oh well, if you can only pass to others when you are in front of the goal (and even then you can't even pass properly), then you are not gonna score, are you? The Australian team was quite impressive, I think we will see more nice games with the Australians.

the oz team weren't playing pretty but they got the results... and in the last ten minutes too!
i was ecstatic.
gus hiddink is a pure genius.
putting in three forwards like that was a sheer masterstroke of genius.
josh was very slow but he was good in the air and he annoyed the japanese defence a lot, viduka is the decoy and nobody noticed aloisi until he scored. for a fat guy, he's got a sweet left foot.
congrats to cahill for being the first ever guy to score for australia in the world cup and congrats the socceroos for winning their first world cup match ever.
go socceroos!

Go Australia indeed, very disheartened at half time but what a comeback, had to get the third goal to rub it in, but next match should be waaaay harder... some broken sleeps coming up.

Yeah, go aussies, should have been 3-0 but we'll take it.
Monica Seles might disagree with your thoughts japanatw, she got a nasty injury while playing, quite violent in fact.

I wonder where "Japan all the way" is tonight? Not wanting to rub anything in as that's not gracious, but I actually agree with "Joer Bugner" and his/her views about the physicality of the modern game these days.
I came away from last night's game feeling rather disappointed at the way some of the Japanese players appeared to be taking dives for the smallest of bumps. Was that just me? And some of the past/present top South American teams had/have players who tackle like trojans or chase like bull terriers. What about them?
Anyway, a win's a win. Onya Socceroos!

Pardon my intrusion on this all-male thread. I watch the early games with my better half, who is a football (soccer) fanatic. The one game that stood out for me was Czech vs Ghana. Ghana was unbelievable! Did you see the way the guys ran and ran and ran? My oh my, I have never seen such speed, such determination on all the players' faces and they certainly deserved the win. Brazil vs Ghana will be an interesting match to watch for sure!
Last night's match - England vs Ecuador was a B O R E .... sorry British fans.

Ghana play with skill too. Their passing movement is superb. They play like how Brazil ought to play.
